GIVE HER WINGS: TEACH GIRLS & EMPOWER WOMENGrowing up in Benin, West Africa, Angélique Kidjo was lucky to come from a family that believed in educating girls. As Kidjo’s mother and father were educated, theymade certain that all 10 of their children went to school, despite the popular belief that education was “only for boys.” Kidjo believes that once a woman is educated, she will fight to ensure that both her sons and daughters receive an education, and so begin a tradition that will be passed from family to family, from generation to generation, and will change the future for women.

In this program, Angélique will share stories from her work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and from the Batonga Foundation, an organization she formed in 2006 to empower young girls through education. During her speech, she will interweave songs with accompaniment by guitarist, singer, and songwriter Dominic James, who has toured and recorded with Angélique, Paul Simon, Harry Belafonte, Pharoah Sanders, among many others. James was all also the featured guitar and bass section on Shakira’s hit “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

World-class musician and humanitarian Angélique Kidjo is one of Africa’s most celebrated singers and an empowering voice for women’s rights, human rights, and social justice.

With her infectious energy, her passion for performance, and her inspiring story, Angélique is truly a unique speaker as she seamlessly weaves singing into all of her speeches.

A creative force with three Grammy’s and thirteen albums to her name, Angélique is an enthusiastic collaborator, having worked with countless artists, including Alicia Keys, Bono, John Legend and Philip Glass. This spring, Angélique will release her reimagining of The Talking Heads’ 1980 masterpiece, Remain in Light. Recorded with superstar producer Jeff Bhasker (Kanye West, Jay Z, and Beyoncé), Angélique has reinterpreted this opus with electrifying rhythms, African guitars, and layered backing vocals.

“I work with everyone who believes that music is the tool of peace,” says Angélique, “For me, music is the only form of art that connects the entire world.”

A UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Angélique is the co-founder of the Batonga Foundation, an organization that promotes secondary education for girls across Africa. She is also the recipient of the Crystal Award from the World Economic Forum in Davos and the Amnesty International “Ambassador of Conscience Award.”
