Subversive Souvenirs

Presented by Center Presents

Subversive Souvenirs exhibit runs October 27th through December 31 2021  in the Center Theater Gallery and is made possible with support from the Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund, Wyoming Humanities and Anvil Hotel.

The collective works in Subversive Souvenirs explore issues such as identity, cultural appropriation, immigration, and assimilation. Rodriguez takes inspiration from the Indigenous cultures of the Americas, the Mexican Muralists of the 1920’s, and Chicano Artists of the 1970’s and 80’s. He is a champion of the outsider and a child of the 1980’s, incorporating the iconography and neon-colored materialistic symbols of his childhood into his work.

His creative process involves consecutive firings to build up multiple layers on the surface of the clay that are infused with original and appropriated imagery. He also employs the latest in 3-D scanning and printing technologies, coupled with centuries-old Pre-Columbian artifacts and ceramic processes, to create a unique, hybrid mix of politically charged, ceramic sculpture.
